Klipkoppie Heritage COTTAGE ADDITION

Churchaven lagoon is in a nature reserve on the West Coast, to the North of Cape Town. The original traditional stone and thatch cottages were built by fishermen along the lagoon shore.  The site sits on a historical farm that has been apportioned for holiday cottages and came with particular design guidelines that dictated a traditional vernacular type architectural response. The brief was to design additional accommodation on the site of an existing storage shed that was demolished. The much needed additional living accommodation that would facilitate a relaxed beach style living arrangement, while at the same time complimenting the existing cottage, was addressed through a careful design response. The concept of individual units connected by in-between spaces allows the new building to scale to the existing. The individual units were pushed and pulled to allow for glimpses of views, and make use of solar gain opportunities. A varied combination of roof types and wall materials provide the detail, texture, and materiality that is considered appropriate for the context.
